Secret Valencia: what to do this weekend at the places guidebooks skip

The Valencia that guidebooks skip is not expensive, it is tight on opening hours. Many of its less-seen sites are free, but only for a few hours on Sunday morning, or by appointment.

The risk with this plan is not the price, it is arriving at a closed door. This page gives the opening hours and how to link the sites without missing the window.

Which little-seen places open at the weekend?

Almost everything free fits between 10:00 and 14:00, and that window forces you to choose. In the centre, the Crypt of San Vicente, one of the city wall towers and the Silk Exchange can be done on foot in that time, with 10 to 15 minutes between each.

The Silk Exchange has two versions of its Sunday hours: Valencia Secreta gives Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 14:00, another 2026 source gives from 10:00 to 15:00. Plan on the shorter one.

The alternative is to leave the centre: the Atarazanas del Grao in the morning and a walk around the port afterwards. What does not fit is everything at once, because the Atarazanas are 3.5 to 4.5 km from the old town.

With 10:00 to 14:00 windows, every journey counts: staying in Ciutat Vella or El Carmen puts the Crypt, the Silk Exchange and the towers within walking distance of your hotel, and your Sunday starts at the door at 10:00.

What about Saturday?

Saturday is market day. The Central Market opens 7:30 to 15:00, closed on Sundays, so it goes in the morning, with the Silk Exchange opposite and San Juan del Hospital a few minutes away.

San Miguel de los Reyes only opens from 11:00 to 13:30 at the weekend, so it is a morning visit, not an afternoon one. The 13:00 tour in Spanish fits best, although it leaves little time for lunch and getting back.

Saturday afternoon is for the Centre del Carme, which combines a historic building with contemporary exhibitions, and for exploring El Carmen on foot. The other free sites are in free things to do in Valencia this weekend.

How long does it take to reach the places outside the centre?

San Miguel de los Reyes is to the north, 4 or 5 km from the old town: 15 to 25 minutes by taxi or 30 to 45 by bus including the wait. The Atarazanas, 3.5 to 4.5 km away, take 25 to 35 minutes by bus. These are estimates from the research sheet, not official times.

Visit Valencia gives an average bus frequency of about 12 minutes, but an average is not a guaranteed wait. Routes and tickets are in getting around Valencia.

What is disappointing about secret Valencia?

  • The "secret" places in the centre are not quiet on a Saturday mid-morning.
  • Free does not mean no queue: free entry concentrates people in a short window.
  • The Mercado de Colón is not a food market, and its opening hours, from 7:30 to 2:00 Sunday to Thursday and until 3:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, are those of the building, not of each stall.
  • The free guided tours do not state capacity or whether they run every week.

A weekend of little-seen places works better over three days than two: many museums close on Mondays, but Friday afternoon leaves time for the Centre del Carme and the Convent of Santo Domingo by appointment.

If you only have one day and would rather see the essentials, the walking route is in what to see in Valencia in one day. And the short, photogenic version of the weekend is in beautiful Valencia.

What isn't published

There are no opening hours for the Convent of Santo Domingo, only the need to book a visit, and no visiting hours for the Estació del Nord. Nor are the capacity or meeting point of the San Miguel de los Reyes tours published, so arrive with time to spare.

Free Sunday entry varies from one source to another, as at the Silk Exchange. Treat it as a guide and confirm on the monument's website before planning the day around it.
