Free things to do in Valencia this weekend: the one zero-cost plan, with no catches
An itinerary that costs nothing: the old town, the Turia Gardens and the Fallas Museum on Sunday, with the timing trap that wrecks more free plans than any other: Sunday afternoon.

A zero-cost plan in Valencia does exist, and it fits into a Sunday morning. The one condition is not to be late: the only part of the plan with limited opening hours is the one that wrecks the most itineraries when it is ignored.
What is really free?
- The old town: Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Plaza de la Virgen, the outside of the Cathedral, the Central Market and the Silk Exchange from the outside, always free.
- The Turia Gardens: the old riverbed turned into a park, with no charge and no closing time.
- The Fallas Museum: free on Sundays and public holidays according to the museum's official listing, with shorter morning hours.
- Malvarrosa beach: free, but it needs public transport from the centre and takes up half an afternoon there and back.
Of the four, the Fallas Museum is the only one with a condition that is easy to miss: it isn't free every day, only on Sundays and public holidays, and with much shorter hours than on weekdays.

Why do the sources contradict each other about the Fallas Museum?
The museum's official listing gives Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00, Sundays and public holidays 10:00 to 14:00, closed on Mondays, and the city council document states €3 on weekdays and free on public holidays. Several tourist guides, on the other hand, still publish €2 full price and €1 reduced without distinguishing Sunday from the rest of the week.
The two versions coexisted in 2024 without any public notice explaining which one applies today. For a plan that depends on "free", the only way to avoid a surprise at the ticket desk is to arrive ready to pay €2 if free entry doesn't apply that day.
If your Sunday plan depends on the Museo Fallero, staying nearby lowers the risk of arriving too late for opening hours that end at midday: the Ruzafa district is less than 20 minutes away on foot. Compare accommodation near the centre.

The sequence that works without motorised transport: the old town from 9:30 to 11:30, bearing in mind that the Central Market opens only until 15:00 and is closed on Sundays, so don't count on it that day. Then 25 to 35 minutes on foot to the Fallas Museum, arriving before 13:00 to leave a margin before the 14:00 closing. The real distances between these points are on the map of Valencia.
Adding the Turia Gardens in the afternoon is free and has no closing time. Malvarrosa, though, needs public transport and takes the whole afternoon there, on the beach and back: it is the first thing to drop if Sunday starts late.
What if the weekend falls during the Fallas?
The free plan still stands, but with traffic restrictions that have nothing to do with the museum or the park: traffic is stopped from roughly 11:45 to 14:30 every day for the mascletà, the daytime firecracker display. If your Sunday falls from 1 to 19 March, plan the journey to the Fallas Museum outside that window.
For a plan that does include a budget, the itinerary and its real costs are in how much a weekend in Valencia costs. And for the one-off events that can be added to this basic plan, see events in Valencia this weekend.
A plan with no admission costs isn't a plan with no accommodation costs: staying a short distance from the old town and the Fallas Museum saves the one expense that can't be avoided, repeated transport. Compare well-placed hotels.
