Weekend trips from Valencia: how much of the city you lose by leaving it

Leaving Valencia for a weekend trip takes more time than travel blogs claim: 1h15 to 1h45 to the northern Costa Blanca, not "just over an hour". Here is the honest sum of what you gain and what you give up.

Weekend trips from Valencia: how much of the city you lose by leaving it

"A trip out of Valencia" sounds like half a day. In practice, any destination more than an hour's drive away eats almost a full day between getting there, getting back and parking, and that comes straight out of the time left for the city itself.

The times on this page are by car. If you have flown in and not hired one, check the train or bus timetable for your destination before counting on the trip.

How long does it really take?

Sites promoting short breaks describe Dénia, Jávea, Calpe, Altea or Moraira as "just over an hour" from Valencia. That is an optimistic estimate: at the weekend, with normal traffic and not counting parking time, the real journey is around 1h15 to 1h45 each way. It is not an official figure but a cautious estimate based on distance and usual weekend traffic, and we flag it as such.

Type of tripJourney each wayMinimum time at the destination to make it worthwhile
Nearby town (inland or south coast)30 to 45 minutes2 to 3 hours
Northern Costa Blanca (Jávea, Calpe, Altea)1h15 to 1h454 to 5 hours
Route through several towns in one day1h30 to 2h30 in totalnot advisable in a single weekend

What do you miss in Valencia if you go away for a day?

A full day out leaves, at most, half a real day for the city, once arrival or departure is counted. If the point of the trip is Valencia and its Fallas, that day comes straight out of the itinerary in what to do in Valencia this weekend, which already fills the useful hours of two full days without any trips.

The simple sum: on a two-day weekend, a one-day trip leaves a single day for everything else. It can be done, but it means choosing between the festival and the outing, not doing both.

A full day out works better with an extra night in Valencia before or after: that way the journey takes no time away from either the city or the coast. Compare places to stay if you decide to stretch the weekend to three days.

What about a short trip within the metropolitan area?

Towns 30 to 45 minutes from Valencia fit better into a weekend that is already busy: 2 to 3 hours there is enough to make the outing worthwhile without sacrificing the whole day. It is the sensible option if the main goal is still the city and its Fallas.

None of the sources we consulted publishes an official list of those towns with verified distances, so check the real journey before setting off. That matters most during Fallas, when traffic leaving the city backs up because of the restrictions in the centre. The detail of those closures is in the Fallas 2026 dates.

When is it NOT worth leaving?

When the weekend already has a packed Fallas schedule: a mascletà, a falla route and a night-time event fill a whole Saturday, according to the breakdown in how much a weekend in Valencia costs. Adding a trip of more than an hour that same weekend leaves both half done.

A trip makes more sense on a weekend without Fallas, or on a three-day long weekend where the third day is given entirely to getting out of the city without taking anything from the rest.

If you decide the trip is worth it, book it as a separate day, not as an add-on to a Fallas weekend: compare places to stay that let you leave early without missing the previous day's mascletà.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Valencia to the northern Costa Blanca?
Tourism promotion sites talk about "just over an hour" to Jávea, Calpe or Altea. The real weekend journey, with traffic and not counting parking, is around 1h15 to 1h45. The 15 to 30 minute difference is not rounding: it is the margin almost no blog admits.
Can you combine a trip out with the Fallas?
With reservations. Adding a whole day away to a Fallas weekend leaves very little real time for the festival, which fills a full day on its own. The combination works better on a three-day long weekend than on a two-day one.
How much time should you spend at the destination to make the trip worthwhile?
At least 4 to 5 hours there, not counting the journey. Any less and the travel time outweighs the visit, and it feels like a day spent on the road.
How many trips fit into one weekend?
One, not two. Chaining two outings of more than an hour on the same weekend leaves Valencia itself practically unvisited, and the city is usually the main reason for the trip.
